Best upgrade for an old 939

Hi, i need to upgrade my cpu. Am having savage spikes using huge databases and playing poker simultaneously (and yes, i HAVE to have these databases running while i am playing, or i wouldnt have a problem!)

Basically, i know (and correct this noob computeretard if im wrong), that the 939 is basically outdated, so no new cpus will be made, but i can upgrade from what i have (an athlon x2 3500_+)

Since this will be my last forseeable upgrade, i am thinking of biting the bullet and prolly getting the best cpu i can, to extend the life of my puter the best. I dont play games, and poker is pretty much the only thing i use the puter for)

Not sure if i want to oc, not at the moment

SO, I am thinking of an opteron 185, or an fx 57 or an amd athlon x2

Basic prices i find on newegg

opty 185 $239
opty 180 $169
Amd Athlon 64 4000+ Clawhammer 2.4Ghz $56

Cant seem to find an fx57

My thoughts are to go the whole way, buy an opty 185, what is the best cooler to use for this in case i decide to oc?

My setup is as follows
Hi, i am interested in upgrading my computer, and as a noob, need your help

My cpu maxes out often, (I play a lot of poker, which uses heaps of graphics, memory, databases, etc) at 100%.

I have recently upgraded to 3G ram

What upgrades do you suggest? Is it possible to run two or more cpus on my board, or am i best to just have one more powerful one?

Maybe i dont need a new cpu after all, and there are bottlenecks elsewhere that i am unaware of?

Following is an internal specs of my machine-please note that this was run prior to me upgrading my ram to 3G

Kindest regards,

Paul

AMD Opteron Dualcore 185 (revE6) (Socket939) or
Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+rev.E6 (Socket939)

Poker doesn't take much CPU power does it? Are you playing online? or you have the game in your system?

Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+ is a good upgrade but if you play your games on the internet then I think the problem is your internet connection.

The online poker is not the problem, its the MASSIVE databases and other stuff i need to have going, including speech recogniton

I assume th opty 185 is better than the x2?

Also, does anyone know where the opty 154 fits into things?

I dont think there is too much difference, except that the Opteron will likely run a little cooler and use a little less power. The reason being that the Opteron is is aimed at the server market and will have gone through a stricter quality control than the X2.

Also, does anyone know where the opty 154 fits into things?

I'm pretty sure the Opteron 154 is a single core CPU which runs at 2.8ghz

Bah! I cant edit my post.

I should have said that the 185 is 2.6 Ghz, and the x2 4800 is 2.4 Ghz. I got muddled with the 180, which has the same clock speed as the 4800.

sorry for any confusion. :pt1cable:

Many thanks for all of your replies and opinions. Verdict is unanimous (as was the x posting under cpu)

Opty 180 has been ordered, and a new poker software just came out last night. Combining the two should help me very much!

You might try your new setup with just 2 gigs of ram. You want to stick with even numbers of ram sticks in order run in dual channel. You might try running a few benchmarks both ways and see how much of a difference it makes. The Opty 180 is a great choice. I have the 170 running in one of my computers and I pretty happy with it.

Bad choice. $239 + cooler, an Nforce 4 mainboard and only 1gb of ram?

You should have sold your board, RAM and CPU on craiglist for $80-100 and bought new:
$90 - Gigabyte P35 (free ship)
$60 - OEM e2160 (ewhiz) OC to 3.0ghz
$20 - Arctic Cooler Pro 7
$35 - 2gb Cruciall DDR2- Ballistix

For a total of only $205 !! for better performance and double the RAM.

*edit*
Just read you upgraded to 3gb of DDR? WTF did that cost you? It's twice as much as DDR2!
