In another question, I was told to type sfc in the run dialogue box, to check
the integrety of windows system files.
I did this, and nothing happened. I was hoping I could get further
instructions on the matter. Thankyou.

1. Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
2. In the Command Prompt window type: SFC /SCANNOW
and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD available.

If running XP, and I think W2000, the command is "sfc /scannow" , (w/o the quotes). Make sure that there is a space between the "c" and "/". Have the XP CD handy, and wait to the wizard is through, before using the computer.

Running sfc by itself would do nothing apparent. Include " /scannow" (no
quotes and space between sfc and the /.

Hi Carey. You guy always say to have the XP-CD handy = what about those of
us who got XP already installed on our PCs and have more than one CD. Which
one do we put in the drive? For example I have 2 CDs for my W98 HP
computer.

Any cd for the same OS edition/service-pack-level is fine for sfc. Unlike a
repair install you will not be asked to input the product key so any XP Pro
sp2 cd is good for any installation of XP Pro sp2. Obviously, Home does not
work with a Pro installation, etc. It is a good idea to make a slipstreamed
copy of your OS as each service pack comes out. An XP Pro original release
cd cannot be used with an XP Pro that has SP1 or SP2 already installed.

That's all the mfg's give you! The last MS CD I got was in 1996 (W95) with
a custom made PC. We've already reinstalled the OS on this PC so are
familiar with the process. The question is - since I got 6 CDs with this PC
which of the 6 would I try if SFC asked for the CD? I'm not talking about
doing a full recovery.

sorry, but this was an example. it is just as true for Home. the edition
and service pack level must match. I guess I assumed you would understand
the point. sorry for any confusion.

You need to identify the cd with the Windows setup file on it. I have no
idea how yours is laid out. If one of the cd's has a large image file on it
instead of Windows setup files then you will not be able to supply a Windows
cd for the system file checker. However, you can still run sfc because it
may not need a cd and if it does you can cancel out of sfc with no risk of
harm. Go ahead and try it.

I already ran it the other night. It didn't ask for a CD and I have no idea
what it did - since it doesn't tell you if it found any problems.

Also, I can't UNINSTALL my HP camera software (as suggested here) because
Add-Remove-Programs opens an INSTALL window and says its the software
"network resource that's not available" then it locks up! How the holy
hell do I remove the software to reinstall it if Add/Remove wont do it? It
has no self UNinstaller??!?!!?!?!

Also how do I change a programs ASSOCIATION in WX-P? Maybe I can try and
change the association I can open the wizard somehow - so I can unload my
digital camera. I got the new updated drivers but they made no difference.
