Hi, I was wondering if removing the IHS on my x2 3800+ toledo would be worth it. I lapped the heatsink and IHS and it dropped my temps a few degrees but I need lower temps.

I can't speak from direct experience but my cousin did it to that self same processor and moaned that it was a total waste of time (maybe 1-2*C) and that now he can't sell 'em on either.

I think your better off investing in better cooling - its the only way you'll realise a significant temp drop methinks.

i did it to mine for overclocking reasons and there was no change at all...not in temps, not in the max overclock...i do have a snazzy keychain now though...other than that, there was no benefit to my ihs removal. who knows though, you might get lucky. if you end up doing it though, make sure you dont cut into the chip or scratch the cores...that would be bad. really bad.

good luck either way.

Seems like a LOT of "work vs possible reward" for the possible gains you could get at this point with a 3800+. UNLESS you just want to do it for the practice so when you get a faster CPU you can make a decision on if it is worth it.

In other words, I doubt if you could get another 100 Mhz out of it-therefore you would see no noticeable gains out of your time and effort.

well...lets see...it was either get the 512mb, 512bit 2900 pro for 200 bucks and get watercooling, or get a set of 8800gts 320's in sli...

plus, the card pushes a crapload more fps than the 7950gx2 in the games i play...
