Have a look in Excel's Tools>Options menu, Save tab and check the location of auto-recovery files. If it's to your Desktop folder, that's what you're looking at. Change it to somewhere within Documents and Settings>My Documents. Auto Recovery is useful because it limits the amount of work you have to do in the event of a crash or power failure. Mine is set to three minutes but I think the default is ten - far more input than I would rather have to redo.
