Hello,
my parents have this motherboard from a PC that I built them a while back. They currently have the Pentium D 840 running with it... They don't need an upgrade as they use onboard video, sound, etc. It's just for web surfing and using basic word programs...
Anyway, I was wondering if these Pentium D compatible motherboards will work with the newer chips from intel, such as the E2180??? I want to buy it since it's so much more energy efficient but I don't want to buy a new mobo along with it since they don't really need to upgrade and then I'll end up having to buy new RAM as well.
Anyone know?? ECS website has no useful info, except that I read in forums that the "2.0" version of this motherboard DOES work with C2D processors....

V2.0 will have the updated VRM to support a Core2 Duo/Pentium Dual Core/Celeron 4xx, open your comptuer and look on the motherboard for the version, but honnestly with that motherboard, single channel memory sucks along with the limited AGP function, its not worth it for the small performance gain, better off with a motherboard and cpu.
My version 2.0 board came bundled with an E4300. I had to do a BIOS update to handle the E2180, and the current Celeron 420. There does not seem to be any such BIOS update for 1.0a.
Don't know if you live near a Fry's, but they have been running an in store special for the last few weeks for an E2180 and ECS P4M890 board for ~$75. Unfortunately, they do not offer this on line. Current offer is for an E2200 and a different board for $99.99. http://www.netaffilia.com/ad/elect [...] 29977.html

I know what I know, and I don't know what I don't know.
thanks guys for your quick responses. I double checked the version, and it is a 1.0a for sure, so I guess I'm out of luck with the newer dual cores. I guess I'll just let my parents stick with the Pentium D for now, and upgrade their whole system after a few months. Thanks again!
