I am in the process of gathering parts for a new computer and am looking for some help and recomendations on a few items.
Here is what I have to reuse:
Samsung 245BW
Samsung HD501LJ 500gb HDD
ASUS SATA DVD dVD-2014L1T
OCZ PC2 6400 2x2GB dual channel SLI ready edition 5-4-4 PN=ocz2n800sr4gk
I will use the system for the normal email/surfing and a lot of photo processing(Photoshop and slide scanning) and website developing(dreamweaver). When thats not being done gaming is very relaxing. IL2 1946, GRAW, Rainbow six Vegas, FEAR, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Swat 4, and a few other older games like European Air War and RR tycoon3. I had just bought an iBuyPower from COSTCO but it started not rebooting and since it was only 3 weeks old I took it back and got a refund instead of dealing with any customer support. It was a SLI setup which I liked as it looked good with the 24 inch Samsung I got for it and could run the games on high settings.
Anyways... I have burned my eyes out researching new parts and have started getting some. Here is what i have so far;
Cooler Master 830 stacker (have from Compusa folding sale)
Quad Q6600 CPU (already ordered with GO Stepping)
I will be going with a 780i MOB as i plan to use 2 video cards as a future upgrade. this will have to last awhile (the old computer lasted 3 years).I plan to OC the system below MAX but probably above 3.0
my questions are:
which 780i MOB to get
which CPU cooler to get to fit MOB
will VGA coolers be needed
Is the PSU picked good for everything (2 video cards, more HDDs and future addons )
Is the memory I have good enough?
stay with XP (had issues with games and vista on the ibuypower)
Am I overlooking anything? what else do I need to look at. I want a good, fast, reliable system that will last me at least several years and is upgradable (this is why the 780i). I am currantly stuck with a borrowed laptop so need to move on getting this built.
I would welcome any critiques, hints, suggestions and help
MSRP $260. newegg jacked up the price by $50 something. Shop elsewhere. The other choice is ASUS for over $300. As for which cpu coolers will fit, I suggest you ask this in:
Nope, the GTS & GTX & ULTRA don't need other coolers. Their stock ones are pretty decent.
Yup, the PSU is top of the line, but it may not be enough for SLI. Personally, I would go with 750W for dual & 1000W for tri. Not that the cards use that much power, just that I'll have room for more upgrades & overclocking.
Your OCZ ram will be fine.
See what I said about psu. You don't want something barely to get by, you want something to last for years. Get a big PSU. I haven't looked at another other psu since I got my Galaxy over 1 year ago. The PSU is the single most overlooked part of a PC.
I would get a good cpu cooler like Freezer 7 Pro, etc. to keep the cpu cool.
I'm sure you have the basic parts like keyboad, mouse, etc. in addition to your list.
