Video on laptop

video is scrambled, cannot make out anything on the screen. It looks like weaved fabric. I cannot reformat because I can not see the menu. Cannot load safemode, or bios, cause I can not see the menu. Any help would be appreciated. IBM Thinkpad R51 laptop

This is probably a cooked video card, possibly an issue with the screen but I'm leaning towards video card. If you attach an external monitor to the laptop do you get the same thing?
