I'm looking to go for a cheap upgrade because money is tight. I have a p4 and want to get an E21xx cpu and overclock it. I'm going to use all my old hardware except my motherboard (current chipset 925x doesn't support anything else but p4) and case.

My question is what inexpensive motherboards yield the best overclocking output for the E21xx series?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131189&Tpk=p5k%2bse $89.99 was $114 when I bought it. I'm running e2180 3.33. Was tricky to oc over 3.0 with bios 0402 but with the 0907 it is a breeze. Latest bios makes it alot more OC friendly. I'd be happy to email you Bios settings if you get this one. FYI I am using stock cooler. Latest bios adds support for Penryns as well. Tigerdirect has the e2180 on sale for $59.99 after MIR.

oh wow I am really considering getting the e2180 from tigerdirect its only 50$

and then get an aftermarket cooler.

I was looking at these two boards
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059 GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L 100$
and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127031 ABIT IP35-E 90$

any opinions on those

the P35-DS3L & the IP35-E are very, very similar mobos.
Currently the abit is $60 after rebate though versus the $100 of the Gigabyte & imo that makes the choice between them a no-brainer.

The P5K SE is looking better and better. I updated from bios 0407 to 0907 so I could use penryn. It made the bios lots more OC friendly. The e2180 run 2.6 out of the gate with no tweaks. Before I had to run 1.425v to achieve 3+ now I'm running 3.0 at 1.25v and 20c cooler then before. Wooot. I think I might have to put mt Artic freezer 7 in and see what happens. I think I can get 3.5 with a better cooler. I'll mess around after the kid goes to bed.

Shadow: any particular reason why the P35-DS3L is worth 40$ more than the ABIT IP35-E? My primary use would be games

Roadrunner: same question, what makes the ASUS P5K SE 30$ better than the abit? sorry for the extensive questioning

The Abit IP35-e has been a very popular OC'ing mobo, especially for $40 cheaper. The DS3L is also popular too, so don't count it out, but for $40 more, I'd just get the Abit IP35-e and be done with it. Here's a link that Anandtech has on OC'ing e21xx CPU's. Check out all of the mobo's that were used. Most of them are the Abit IP35-e's, but you can see for yourself.

I just love Asus boards. I have never had a problem with them. And I like the fact that you can make your own Bios boot logo with ASUS. I like the extra custom touch. And if you screw up the bios Asus will reset its self most of the time. If it dont auto reset you just reset the cmos and try again.

If I were going for a long-term upgrade, I'd spend more money and the asus board would look more appealing. Also this is my first build so I don't want to get something with more features than I need.
