Only when I watch hdtv I periodically get a blank black screen during the
normal program. The black screen usually lasts about 2-4 seconds and then
returns to the normal screen. It happens maybe 6 times in some hour long
shows but not on all shows.

Is this a problem with this particular model, a normal ocurrance with HDTV
or a problem with my cable TV company.
I have not been able to get the cable company to admit it's their problem
but there aren't too many HDTV's so they may not yet be aware of the
problem.

I have an extended warranty and if it's a TV problem, maybe I can get them
to fix it if they have a fix.

I see the same dropouts when watching HD channels through a Moto STB,
but viewed on a SD analog TV. So, at least in some cases, we can rule
out the TV sets. It has to be either the HD signal, the cable company,
or the STBs.

Do you have a surround sound system?
Does the sound coming out of SS remain uninterrupted?

If no.. then could be a MotoSTB/cable co problem.

If yes to both.. then..

I wouldn't be surprised if the 43fdx20b has the same missing cap
flaw as the 43fdx01b.

-----

43fdx01b.. defect..

Certain bright scenes cause the Hitachi set to loose it's display
lock on component inputs. (I.E. Similar blanking delay that one get's
when you switch video inputs). (Star Trek Enterprise phaser scenes,
blanking similar to the one get's when switching video inputs. )

Adding recommended caps reduced the problem for 1080i mode.

Eventually, I found that sending the set a 720P signal eliminated
the video locking issues.

----

and/or . reducing overall length of component video cables might help.
This includes bypassing any component switches..

Do you encounter the same symptom watching a DVD via composite input?

Composite from a DVD.. (do you mean yellow input?)
Never tried it.

I typically feed my TV with a s-video or component inputs.

The problem described/fix below was only for the component(YPrPb/
YCrCb) inputs.. S-Video input has always been rock steady.. (Except
for the occasional loose connector in my AV system.)

Try DVD with composite (YRW) and component (YPBR) connections rather than
just the S_Video, see if symptom is still there. If it is not then probably
via set top box supplied by your signal supplier. (BTW: YRW - Yellow, Red,
White. YPBR - green, blue, red.)

Why??? In my case.. S-video inputs never had any problems.

P.S.. you're not addressing the original author of this thread.
I've already solved my problems.

As for 43fdx01b problem.. it affected only the component inputs..

from 1 .. Zenith HDV-420 (1080i mode) (both before and after cap
fix)
from 2... Zoom/Motorola HTDV receiver in 1080i mode + cap fix.
(note: Cap fix did reduce the frequency of the blank outs..)

Zomm/Motorola HDTV receiver in 720P mode
+ Hitachi cap fix == no more symptoms.
