Hello guys,

I’m a long time reader and this is my first custom build. I have made a lot of research as you will probably notice with my choices but I would like to have a confirmation. I’m a mid to high end gamer and I would like this system to be able to handle games such as Crysis and CoD4. I’m also planning a mild overclocking and my budget is around $1500CAD (max $2000CAD). Here’s what I was thinking of buying:

CPU: INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 2.40G/1066/8M/S775
Mobo: GIGABYTE S775 GA-P35-DS3L P35 PCIE
GPU: HIS Radeon HD 3870 ICEQ3 775MHZ 512MB 256BIT GDDR4 PCI-E 2XDVI HDTV Out Video Card
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 206BW 20IN Widescreen LCD Black 1680X1050 3000:1 2MS VGA DVI-D HDCP
Memory: Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 3GB/S 7200RPM 16MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Mid Tower Gamer Case 900 ATX 9 Drive Bay No PS Top USB2.0 1394 Audio
PSU: Corsair HX520 CMPSU-520HX 520W ATX Triple 12V 40A Continuous 24PIN ATX Modular 120MM Power Supply
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 32BIT DVD OEM
Heatsink: Thermalright ULTRA-120 Extreme 6 Heatpipe Cooler LGA775 Heatsink *Fan Not Included*

Total (with taxes) : $1690CAD

So what do you guys think?

On a side note, my brother has a Dell E521, which he bought a year ago. He’s only into WoW and similar games (not gpu intensive). However this computer came with integrated graphics and it can’t even handle WoW, just to show you how bad it is. He’s getting 20 to 30 FPS, with Vsync off and it can drop to 10-15 when he’s in Shattrah. He’s looking for an aftermarket gpu and he asked for my help. My only concern is the PSU, which is only 305W and seems pretty low. I know Dell PSU’s are underrated, I didn’t get time to check, but I think it has 18 or 22 amps of the 12v rail.

Here are the specs to help you out:

Cpu: AMD Athlon X2 3800
Mobo : Some crappy mobo but has a PCI-E slot, NForce 430 chipset, I think.
HD: 120gb
Memory: 2gb DDR2-533, 4-4-4-12, 4 x 512mb
Psu: 305W, 18 or 22 amps on the 12v rail
Gpu : Integrated graphics, 6150Le
Os: Vista Home premium

I was trying to find a GPU that could bring the game to about 40-50 fps, and I’m having a hard time finding one. I was thinking the X1300, the X1600 or even the 8600gt could do the job.

Considering the specs above:
A- What GPU would be needed to run WoW at 40 fps?
B- What is the best GPU he could get?

Thanks a lot for the help, I appreciate.

I had a Emachines with most of everything your brothers has, except for the same motherboard, not sure whats in his, and I had Athlon 64 x2 4400 I bought from bestbuy, LOL. I took it back! But I will say that with the 8600gt which i still have, not sure if I am going to upgrade to a 8800 gtx with my new build, or just get another 8600gt and run it in SLI. My new builds on here so if ya want check it out, let me know what you think. The 8600Gt and my old emachine T6216(two and half years old, with XP) and the new Emachine both handled Warhammer 40,000 dark crusade very well, when I played on line no lag, and the grafix looked pretty good on High settings. For 100.00 bucks the xfx 8600gt didn't seem like a bad deal, some on here say i should up grade though given the new build. Hope this helps

Next time don't mix 2 posts together. You can get more replies with 2 posts. 1st about your new build; 2nd about your bro's upgrade.

Your new build list looks great, but it is missing a 12cm fan for the cpu cooler. Get a Scythe 60-ish cfm.

Google cpuz & install on your bro's pc. List the mobo brand & model. If it does have a PCI-E slot, my suggestion is get a HD3850 or a X2900 or a X1900 depending on his budget, and a good 450W PSU like Corsair/Earthwatts.
