Can it happen? Yes. Will it work? Yes, most likely. Would I do it long term? No. I've done it when I just needed files off an old hdd, but I don't think I'd do it long term.
Sure it works. I've read that the reason not mix them (at least with your primary boot HD) is that when you mix devices with very different speed capabilities on one IDE cable ... all devices run at or near the speed of the slower device. But I don't know if that is really true. In any event they certainly will work together. That said, and I've done it with secondary HDs, I always try hard to put HDs on one IDE connector and the various other IDE devices on the other.
The biggest issue with doing that is when you want to use both devices at the same time. Things such as ripping or burning and even game load times are greater because each device takes turns using the cable for data transfer. But to answer your question, yes it will work.
