250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor
COOLER MASTER Real Power Pro RS-650-ACAA-A1 ATX12V / EPS12V 650W Power Supply
SAPPHIRE 100222L Radeon HD 2900PRO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card
Intel BOXDG31PR LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
2gb A-DATA ddr2 800 ram

My old agp system seems to run better than my new one above. The specs to my old system are:

asus p4c-800e deluxe mobo
512mb x1950pro agp
P4@ 3GHz 478
2gb corsair value ram
500W psu
250GB hard drive eide

My new system doesn't seem to outperform my old rig in any game, but even more so in eq2. This is my 4th build and this is the first one that has me completely baffled. I've checked eq2 forums and people with similar specs have been playing on max settings, and I can only play on balanced. Sometimes I get weird lines on the screen which cause a rippling in the game. COD4 is the same problem. IN 3dmark06 I get a score of 9512. I ran everest while running games and I my hottest temp is 55c on core 1, is that too hot? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, the HD2900PRO is a DX10 remake of the X1950PRO(DX9). So that would explain no performance gain.

If it's solely a gaming build, you should go with a dual core & a current-gen gpu like HD3870 or 8800GT 512.

I keep telling everyone that a Quadcore is a useless piece of hardware for gaming, well maybe not useless but a fast dual core would have been better. You need to overclock that quad-core to 3ghz to get great gaming performance. I just cannot believe how many people are buying these things for gaming.
Also, yes, the 2900 is on par with a 1950pro for raw horsepower, just supports DX10.
However, all things considered, it should not be performing any worse. Have you downloaded and installed all the latest drivers for the motherboard, and GPU?
Since you have a new drive, I assume you started with a clean install of Windows?

Also-check your BIOS to make sure the quad-core is being detected and the buss/mulitplier settings are correct. Sometimes they are not detected and set up correctly your BIOS.

I'd definately OC the processor, but I'd blame most of your slow down on the video card. If you can, grab a Radeon 3870 or 8800 GT. And you may be able to flash that 2900 PRO to a 2900 XT, but I can't remember if it's the PRO model you can do this on?

About the Quads, lots of people who play RTS games (SupCom) see huge benefits from it, and it's not the cause of most game lag (processors are rarely the primary cause of this). But anyway that's a discussion for a different thread :)

EQ2 player here. The people who are playing on max graphics are people with 2 crossfire or 2 SLI cards in the PC's. Even a single 3870 on max graphic in EQ2 lags out. I cant speak for a 8800 (not a fan of nvidia to many issues with them in EQ2) but on the forums people are not at max graphics on 1 card.

I will ask this what resolution are you running?

You really didn't upgrade in the graphics card department, this is why you see little or no difference. People are brainwashed about these quad cores, maybe they think there future proofing or something. Someone please show me where a quad outperforms an = dual core of the same model as the quad, example E6600 vs Q6600 both clocked the same.

A Q6600 will outperform an E6600 in Forbidden Planet.
