If you are going to be doing serious (read large complex designs) work, I'd suggest going with a Q6600, XP 64 and 8 gigs of memory. Will be a huge increase in your work speeds, anywhere from 1 to 10 times as fast for complex models. The video card is good for entry level, though it can get slow at times when rendering complex models on a larger monitor.
You can get 8 gig of memory for around 200 USD and the Q for around 270 USD. A little more than the AMD, but a very big leap in performance.
Hmmmm thats good. My price limit is about $2000 CND. Hmmm if i use newegg, they ship to Canada right? Does anyone know a good motherboard to support all of this? I was going to get the parts this wkend. Hmmm
I don't think newegg & the majority of u.s. e-stores ship to canada, but I could be wrong. Even so, you'll be charged customs & brokerage fees which could be 10-50% of your total price.
Except for the video card, these are the basics that I use for my main system, a lot of Autocad 08, 3DS Max 9 and Maya 08 work. Not including taxes drives and case, about 1300 CDN.
My video is a 8800 GTX. A lot of users are going to the non-pro cards. Though usually not officially supported by the design program, they do the job just fine, in fact sometimes better than the pro card. My system is running 24/7 at ~ 40% overclock on the CPU (Coolit Eliminator for cooling). XP 64 is my main os. Stable no crashes at all. Amazing what I can do with it. Have yet to have it use the swap file, though gotten close, 90%+ on memory usage.
Last word of advice, don't use Vista if possible. XP is still quite a bit faster even 64, and uses substantially less resources.
