Hi i'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. I was wondering which card out of the 2 above would last longer as the 3870 supports directx 10,1 and the 8800GT supports directx 10. Which card will last better in the long run, i'm not looking to upgrade again in 6 months time.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Depending on what games you intend to play, you may not see much difference.
Otherwise a 512MB 8800GT should perform a little better.

I got a HD3870, which wasn't a mistake, except that it was from Diamond, which was.

Heh, I would have done the same. Bought the 640MB GTS like 2 1/2 weeks before the GT was released. It was my own fault though... I wasn't into hardware as much at the time. Now I'm keeping on top of all the latest and greatest as best as I can. >.>

I got a Diamond as well. They should rename themselves to Cubic Zirconia

This is a good and as-up to date as possible review of the 1gb 8800gt, also showing the 512mb 8800gt and 3870 side-by-side, drivers are current as are game patches, not forgetting crysis 1.1.

If youve got the cash for either, then scout around and find one with a good bundle. Some cards have the full 3dmark06 and a recent game, so its worth looking out for.

DirectX 10 vs. DirectX 10.1 is irrelevant.

I think one overlooked question is this: do you plan to run a multi-gpu solution down the road as an upgrade path? The 8800GT looks to be better for single card solutions; the 3870, however, is better for multi-gpu setups. Besides, consider waiting to see the 3870 X2 price and performance...

The 8800GT performs better, but costs more. I think either would make you happy. I do think that nVidia has better vendors though (XFX, eVGA).
