This is starting to drive me crazy. My card is about a year old. I have the 169.21 drivers. I started overclocking it about a week ago with ATi tool. Fan started acting crazy after that. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled ATi tool.
I woke up this morning to the fan at 100% for no reason (human reason) which isn't abnormal for the past week. It seems to have a mind of its own. So I downloaded RivaTuner. I was able to adjust the fan for about fifteen minutes, than all of a sudden, that option was gone. WTF? When I open the "low level sytem settings" tab it only has the option for nvstrap (whatever that is?). Also, the hardware monitoring tab no longer shows the fan duty speed.
On a side note, ATi tool shows 0Mhz for the "3D low power" slider. Since my 3DMarks are unaffected and gaming seems fine, I've ignored this. This was one of those things that was working and then spontaneously stopped (according to human rules. Computers obviously use different rules which I don't understand.)
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling everything from drivers to 3rd party software. No luck.
First off, don't use ATI tool, I hate it, but I know others like it. I find that it can screw up the fan badly, it once turned on my old 1950 at a fan speed of zero, luckily I caught it in time.
Secondly, I own the same card as you. Open Riva, go to the main tab, look at the driver settings section, click on the customize tab, choose system settings, click on the fan tab, choose the direct control method, move the slider to where you want it, click apply these settings at startup box, save, then click apply at the bottoms. This should work.
As a last note, the stock fan is at 59% before changing it. To be honest don't expect changing the fan to really affect the overclocking potential. I found my card to run pretty cool as it is, and the fan doesn't really change that too much. I don't actually adjust my fan speed, but if you want to go ahead. Also, I got mine to overclock to 625/900(1800 effective). Tell me how yours goes.
