What all has to be connected for the harddrive to work

The SATA data cable connection and the power connection, usually SATA but some older drives (Raptor) have both SATA and Molex. Only one or the other of the power connectors should be used at once on the Raptor.

 

Depending on the mobo make sure that you connect the SATA to the SATA connectors on the ICH (southbridge) not the outboard ones e.g., GSATA in the case of Gigabyte.
