Hey, I own a x1900xt and I am beginning to see some quite strange behaviour.

I noticed whilst playing WoW that my card was usually running in the high 80's, sometimes 90 degrees C. This was a little strange, so i tried installing BioShock. After a few mins of Bioshock my card started beeping and i got artifacts. This was the first time I have ever had this happen. I tried putting the graphics on very low and still my card was over heating.

The next step I took was to clean out my PC. I bought some compressed air and did a cleaning job. I must admit it was not very thorough as I didn't want to break anything and it was my first time using a can. I noticed only a very small difference.

The ultimate shock was when my PC started artifacting after about 10 minutes of Half Life 2. When I first bought my PC I was running Half life two without a sweat!

I just downloaded ATI tray tools and was playing around with the fan speed. What do you guys advise? will 100% fan speed on all the time have wear and tear on the card, or will the noise drive me insane before hand.

I heard that this gen of cards were suffering from problems due to ageing, is this true?

thanks,

OK well if you didnt do a very thorough job then i sugest you take the card out and clean it properly,im thinking you may have just managed to push some dust or some such further in to the card making it overheat more.
As far as fan speed goes you really need to test it after you have cleaned the card properly and see how high it needs to be set, It will wear more the faster it runs but thats not to say it will die in a week or anything like that but the slower you can run it the better.
All cards will get problems as they age things dont last forever and it is possable that one or more of the components on the card are dieing but it sounds like a heat issue to me at this point.
You could always fit a differant cooler if you wanted.

Ok thanks, do you have an advice on how to clean it properly? My card had a white plastic box ontop of it, need i get inside there?

General rule of thumb is if you are not happy about removing something then dont, Im going to assume the white box is the plastic shroud over the actual fan you will be able to see what you are doing a lot better without it but as i said if you are not happy removing it then dont. Blow some air in and around the fan area inside the box if you can dont force the straw in anywhere (if you got one with the air) just use some common sence dont pull any wires or knock any capasitors and you will be fine. If it is the problem then i would expect to see some dust come flying out.
