My daughter's laptop isn't working, it does not start up regardless (ie if I choose normal, safe mode, etc) and keeps showing the same message about needing to restart (which I have done a few times).

I thought I might be able to connect her laptop to my PC and scan its hard drive or run a repair program - except that I don't know how or if this can be done. Both have XP on them.

I've tried searching for an answer but only seem to get info which eiher doesn't relate or makes no sense to me (someone was talking about using DVI cables).

I'm looking to see if I can avoid having to reformat the hard drive (last option).

Help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks

BTW, sorry if this is in the wrong section but that might be why I can't find the answer I'm looking for.

You can't do that if the laptop won't boot. Try booting from a Windows XP CD and choosing R and the first screen to get a command prompt. Run "chkdsk c: /p/r" until there are no more errors and then try rebooting.
