Hi,

What is the difference between a Standard and Modular PSU?

In the case of the Coolmaster 1KW they offer both, which one are you recommending and why?

I recommend avoiding modular simply because the more breaks in a wire you have, the greater the chance of interference, shorts, and improperly seated connectors. Modular PSUs are marketing gimmicks to give people something fun to put together that offers no real function.

Wait a second!! Modular power supplies aren't all that bad! It depends on exactly what you need. Yes, due to the nature of design, shorts/improperly seated connectors are slightly more likely to happen, but you are in control here. If you are careful when installing, a modular power supply is every bit as good as a regular one.

The most distinguishing feature of modular power supplies is the ability for the builder/user to not only connect wires to the mobo, but to the power supply itself. Thus, you can remove power connectors that are otherwise unnecessary. The only real benefit to using a modular power supply is an increase in airflow because of the smaller number of wires floating around. Also, it looks better, if you happen to have a case with a transparent side.

Now my guess is that the modular power supply is more expensive. If you are on a budget, or if you really aren't worried about airflow/looks, then skip it. However, if you have the money to spend and would like to increase airflow in your case (which isn't particularly important unless you like to overclock and push your processor/video card temperatures way up) then a modular power supply would be a worthy investment...and they make the inside of your machine look a lot cooler!!
