I work for a school district. The system is mostly a Novel Network which also uses IP.We have a Department that cannot seem to commmunicate with remote sites. We can ping. But, we cannot see them in network neighborhood, nor find them by name , nor IP outside the first switch. All Machines on the switch can be seen. What should we do to allow us to see other client machines outside this switch?>

I'm no ttoo sure what you mean by SMB. However, here's an email from the software vendor we are trying to connect.

Pinging is not a reliable indication that communications will work or not
work. Ping uses the UDP port. We do not copy files across UDP ports. We use
Port 135, netbios and TCP/IP for communicating files across the network.

As a result, regardless of the success or failure to ping, if the Central
Office computer cannot see the Site computer in Network Places and cannot
access the site computer using the IP address or Computer name (see the path
you are attempting to use by going to EZViews Setup Site, click on one of
the sites in question, and select Communications tab), then communications
will fail.

You and I tried browsing to the site computer using both the IP address and
Computer name. Each returned "Network path cannot be found".

Attached is the Communications chapter of the 2.1.1 Setup Guide. I know you
are using 2.1.4, but unfortunately, they haven't broken down the 2.1.4
guides into individual chapters, and I'd have to send you the whole thing.
:-) There is useful information in the Setup Guide that may assist your
network staff in resolving the issue.

Additional useful information can be found in the Help file in EZViews and
in the various communications scenarios on our Support Center Documentation
page.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

actually, I'm wrong, SMB does route. The way they phrase "ping is not a reliable indication of communication" is technically wrong, ping IS a reliable indication of communication. It isn't a reliable indication of whether or not higher level protocols will work. My next guess would be that a firewall is blocking port 135 (or a router isn't configured correctly).
