If I remember correctly, wasn't triple channel ram supposed to come out on the X48 chipset? I remember see some spy photos of future MBs that had 6 dimm slots (and no they weren't combo boards like Gigabytes P35C series) and internet talk about 3 ram channels a number of months back. Anyone know the status?
dual channel ram doesn't give much of a boost over single channel ram...i have never heard anything about triple channel ram, but i doubt it'll have a lot of momentum behind it. it affects performance too little. people are far more interested in better memory controllers and more pci-e lanes.
I think triple channel will debut with intels first nehalem compatible mainboards that utilize quickpath. With tripple channel and an IMC intel will beat amd at all those memory intensive benchmarks.
This is all speculation though. To me it seems unreasonable to rework the memory interface of the core 2 arch just before a new processor architecture is introduced. It would make more sense to add that triple channel to the new release. While i am not sure i'm willing to speculate it will be a ddr3 only feature too. That depends mostly on the new IMC intel will use.
I don't see why you would put 3 DIMM's in a Motherboard when you could simply put in 4 for Quad-Channel if you must have have something greater than Dual-channel
