We are considering moving our existing server rack to another area in the office and we are wondering how easy/safe it is to do this ourselves?

My main concern is that the boss doesn't want to bolt the rack to the floor after we move it.

Is it unsafe to move the rack without bolting to the floor? Is there a purpose to bolting it aside from anchoring it to the floor?

Thanks For Helping!

If you are considering moving server rack with servers inside it - it is not a good idea :) and you probably now that.

The question is: Who takes responsibility if unbolted rack fails to provide it's basic functionality which is, server's protection and stability.

If your boss says so, then advise him of fireworks that unbolted rack can deliver (example, when someone accidentally bumps into it while 15k$ equipment resides inside) and if he is still ok with it, then have him send you an e-mail confirming his wish and do what the man says to save your job ;)
