I built a new HTPC, booted it up and all was fine. Then a day or two later i moved it into another room only to find that it wouldn't boot.

The LED on the motherboard was light up as it should(even when PC is switched off), the fans on case, cpu spin up for about half a second including the hard drive. This happens again after about 3-5 seconds, which continues over and over.

I managed to fix it by removing the CMOS battery for a while and putting it back in, sometimes the problem would happen again while moving the HTPC back onto the shelf from the desk i was attempting to fix it at! Again removing the CMOS battery and putting it back in would fix this problem, but now it doesnt boot at all even after removing the battery.

I also tried reseating all cards and reconnect all the power cables as well as checking for any stray bits that might be shorting it somewhere.

Specs:
Intel Core2 E6600
OCZ 2GB Ram
8600GT GFX
ASUS P5K-VM AiLifestyle Socket 775 iG33
Generic 450w power supply

Thanks in advance,

I would recommend replacing the Power Supply (generic may have a bad solder, or capacitor)
Or failing the above, it could be shorting out.

($100 and well worth the investment)

($47, I have one in my HTPC quiet and still better than generic)

($55 should easily power your system, I personally recommend this one)

Heh. My new MSI board would do the same if I tried to put DDR-2 533 in it. Just can't find the proper divider or smth. 667 and above works fine. So I wouldn't jump the shark with the power supply.

Thanks for the replies, im not too much of a noob at computers, so i like to think :kaola: , but i was kinda stumped about why it starts working once the CMOS battery has been removed and ofc why its packed in all together now :(

The power supply was a bit dodgy from the beginning, i ordered the power supply as a bundle package with the case as it was "recommended" for use with it, it was strange how the 4pin power connect to the processor (ES12V or p4 connector or something) was only 3" long and its a full atx case with the PSU mounted quiet a distance away.

Thanks :)
