Adding USB Ports

Regrets if I am posting this in the wrong forum ..Administrators, please relocate.

Adding USB ports can be added using three designs: External with its own power; External using USB's power; and Internal expansion board.

What are the pros and cons of each, and what do you recommend?

If you want to add USB ports get a PCI USB card or use the headers on the motherboard with a USB bracket.
The device you are using has determined if there is enough power for it in the USB port or if it needs an external source of power.
If it is preferable to use devices with their own power supply when possible.
