Hello,

I want to up grade my vid card and found these two newegg. The first is an 8800 GTS 640mb, the second an 8800GT 512mb "Superclock". They are the same price after rebate.

Or is there another, better one Im over loooking for ~ the same money (tho I'd lean more towards gaming performance than price).

Thank you for taking a look,

Ramble

Some other system specs:

E6600 Conroe
2 gig Ram
975X Mobo

Just checked its still a single slot cooler so i would think its the stock one but im not 100%
As far as how does sharp910sh know what core is what i would think its down to accumilated knowledge, If you read enough reviews or hang around readingon the forums you get to learn these things :).
The 8800 GTS you linked to is a G80 core the 8800GT you linked to is a G92 core, Then Nvidia thought just to clear it all up they would make a 8800GTS based on the G92 core which is why its important to know which core the card has the G80 being the older technology.

Thank you Mactronix. That review of the GTS look pretty good (I don't suppose it matters that it wasn't for exactly the same card? EVGA vs the MSI on newegg?).

And yeah, I have read too that the GT cooler is subpar. So that would add xtra cost to replace it...making the GTS effectively less expensice to boot.

The card cnumartyr just linked to is the G92 GTS i was talking about but most people are agreed that it only shows a differance over the G92 GT if you are running a v/large res and isnt value for the extra cash.

I think we have to define what very large resolution is and what games he would be playing.

1680x1050 Crysis needs a G92 GTS for all High Settings.. It was worth the extra money there for me.

I've only a 19" lcd.

I take it tho, that you agree with that review? That the GTS SSC is better than the GT, despite being based on the old architecture? I like that it has a bit more vRAM.

Honestly? I think anything over 512MB vRAM overkill. I can't remember the link but the games that take advantage of more than 512 MB vRAM are limited. I know PT Boats was one of them. By the time we need more vRAM for the mainstream we will have the real next gen cards out.

The 8800 GT might run a bit warmer, but it doesn't need a new cooler. The *TARGET* temp in the BIOS of my 8800 GTS was 78C. You can just download Rivatuner and up the fan speed to the max you are comfortable with. My GTS's fan speed normally sat around 25-30%. Now I keep it at a steady 60% and it never gets over 60C and it's pretty heavily OC'd.

That GTS G92 sure looks juicy. I don't know if its worth another 50 bucks..but then its only money, right? There's more where that came from!

Well yea if you have the bucks then why not, Its not about the extra VRAM that's not really relevant to the speed. NewEgg have an EVGA GTS which comes out at the same price as the one that cnumartyr linked to after rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130312&Tpk=eVGA%2b8800GTS and you get the 90 day step up program as well http://www.evga.com/stepup/.
More VRAM wont be of benefit to you in this instance as you are running a 19 inch at native res im assuming which definitely dosent come under high res.

While i agree with you in general i would like to point out that it wasn't so long ago about a year that people were being told that 512 was overkill, that the cards couldn't use it and anything over 256 was a waste. The link Evilonigiri posted is a good example of a marketing gimmick but there is a difference between a card that obviously benefits from more ram like the GTS 640 and the GTX 768 and a company slapping a gig of ram on a card and trying to flog it to people who don't know any better

Mac:

I agree with you completely. And in that year 512 MB has become the mainstream.

Eventually 1 GB will become the mainstream, but what I am saying is that by the time it is, we will have the real "next-gen."

I'm saying for this generation 1 GB is overkill and not worth the extra money.

I got this GTS G92 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130312), and am very happy with it. Silent, fast, who could want anything more? :)

I picked it over the GT because it came with the dual slot cooler already, so I didn't have to invest in a new cooler ($30+). It also came with Crysis ($40 - $50), which I was going to buy anyway. So it ended up being cheaper than the GT, in my mind, anyway. :)

Thank you all, you've been very helpful.

I'll most likely buy the GTS G92. The xtra $$ seems worth it to me, if only for Crysis (and other, near-future games). Just need decide which one.

eVGA. Lifetime warranty and a 90 day step up. If the 9800 GX2 comes out you can always move up. :kaola:

I have the 8800 gt 512 superclocked.....it does get very hot but stays stable.....

It plays crysis beautifully (tweaked very high settings) @ anything 1360x768 or below....Thankfully when I get my second one after a price drop I'll be in for some SLI goodness.

Just some more info 4 u
