Sry if this is already answered. But my friend needs a new gfx card badly and he doesnt want to spend 250+ on the 8800GT. So when is the 8800GS coming out? Obviously its gona be 200 or down and its not a bda card ethier.

I think it's going to be an OEM only release. I suggest the 2900Pro for a very cost effective card. Just make sure he has a nice power supply to run it.

It'll probably be a very limited release. I suspect that retailers will overcharge due the lack of supply so you might be better off waiting for the 9600GT.

well, he has a Dell XPS. very nice specs quad core, 3b of ram. I htink he has a sweet comp, almost as good as mien because... eh has a ATi x2400 which i couldbnt belive Dell put in that comp of his so he needs a new card. ANd im a nvidia fan lol so i recommend to him the 8800GS coming out that would be cheep for his budget. And the 96 is worse then the 88GS so nuh-uh im not recommending that for him.

LOL dont get the 2900PRO if ur buying that price bracket. It already superseeded,

Get the ATI 3850 512mb or 256mb depending on the screen resolution ur friend will be running.

The 2900Pro is only $159 dollars at Newegg. It performs slightly faster than the 3850 @stock settings and it's extremely easy to get it to 2900XT speeds. It basically is a 2900XT underclocked slightly, in fact you can even flash the 2900XT bios to it. If you look in THG's review of the 3800 series, you'll see the 3870 trading blows with the 2900XT, both come out about equal. The 3850 doesn't compare to either of them in high resolutions.

For all that cheap performance though, you have a few things to lose. First off is power consumption. Unless his PSU is pretty nice, the 2900Pro is not an option. Secondly, it runs decently cool, but that's because it's fan is as loud as a jet engine.

If your friend meets those requirements above, it's the best price/performance card out on the market. I'm sure a lot of people would agree. Where's Cleeve when I need him?

Well, he is nto going to overclock, he probably has a 500-700watt PSU, dont know the Dell Xps comp he has by heart. He runs umm 1440x what ever number it is. (19" WS moniter). And basicly(i dont know **** about ATi, as i said im liek loyal to nvidia lol) is the 2900pro good, can it play crysis on all high settings in win xp?

Nothing can play Crysis on all high settings at 1400x900 and still get good fps. I'm voting for the HD 3850 512MB too. That is, I'd rather pay a bit more but have less power consumption/heat/noise.

25 is already decent. I played Diablo 2 for years at 25 fps. :)

OK, here's the thing: add a few fps because your friend will use XP instead of Vista, subtract a few fps because the HD 3850 is slower than the 8800GT. He might get 20 fps, give or take a few. If that's too little for his taste he should get the 8800GT. He really doesn't have any other good options, because the HD 3850 is the best card cheaper than the 8800GT. Maybe an HD 3870, but it costs almost as much as the 8800GT...

Thats completely false. Maybe if you're simply refering to a card in his price range. I have a 8800GTS G92 and play at all Very-High (Im not sure if you mean High or Very High but it doesn't really matter) at 1680*1050 and I get 20fps. If I drop down to 1440*900 I can get 30fps. Thats with a single 8800GTS. A good SLI setup (and probably Crossfire to) should easily get great from rates at that resolution.

My bad. By "good fps" I meant 60 fps, and yeah, I did mean one single card. My own 8800 GTX OC2 can't get 60 on high at 1440x900, and it's still one of the best cards available.

These benchmarks show the 8800GT and 8800GTX doing 51 or 52 fps on high at 1024x768.

Maybe the OP should get an 8800GT and play at 1024x768 and 1280x1024 and 1440x900 and stick with whatever feels best.

i own a 8800GT, i play at high/VH at 1600x1200.... thats not the point, the point is my friend who is to lazy ass to make a tosmahrdware accoutn and wouldnt knwo what he was talkign abotu anyways lol needs a better gfx card then his ATi x2400, a good one and i recommended the 8800series (GT preferably) but i saw the GS comign out which would be 200 or less and i said id look into it for him and i jsut want a estimated release date!!!!

And mousemonkey thast not a USD website. and godo FPS in my opinion is 30+ because u get smooth frames at 30.

Some online shops in the EU already have it while those that don't say it will come 29.01.08. Those dates are nothing official though and i don't trust any online shops product availability status.
