I've just built my new desktop with two 500Gb seagate SATA HDD's, and now I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to set it up.

I'm thinking about a RAID 1 config so that there's redundancy for my important files and photos (I'm a photography enthusiast with a large chunk of HDD space dedicated for photo storage). However, upon reading some wikipedia articles about RAID, it seems like it might not be a good idea to use RAID with regular desktop-class HDDs as it might shorten the life of the HDDs. What are your thoughts on this?

Should I go ahead with RAID, or not even bother with it and just use a file-sync software to backup my files from drive A to drive B?

File synicing is better backup technique then using RAID. Because the backup drive is only running when the backup is going it's not likely to break down. Good software makes syncing very easy. I use Nero Backit Up.

However modern desktop drives are pretty durable and getting cheaper. If you want to use raid 1 go for it.
