Newegg has the Gigabyte GV-RX387512H Radeon HD 3870 512MB, but people are claiming it's an overclocked 3850 due to DDR3. The price is good @ $229 and I plan on getting one for both of our systems.

I don't want to pay too much because R700 will be out by the end of the year and it also keeps me under budget as I'm going from 17" Viewsonic CRT's to 20" Viewsonic LCD's.

I know this will hold me over, but my main question is whether there's a difference between a 3850 with 512 DDR3 and a regularly clocked 3870 with DDR3 instead of DDR4.

Okay, that review's good but it's for a DDR4 version. Haven't found one of those. This is DDR3. From the benchmarks I've seen between the 3850 and 3870, DDR4 doesn't make that much of a difference, so I'm going to go with the Gigabyte card for sure. I've heard cooling issues with both the 3970's and the 8800gt's with stock cooling, so the Zalman fan's a big selling point to me.
