My dad's computer is beyond acceptable for slow. He's got a ASUS p5k deluxe, e6600, 2-4GB of ram. THis just started happening today. Temps are fine, volts are fine. Task manager says nothing is really running that much but the performance tab is running near 100% mostly on core 0 ( first block ) ANY ideas what the hell is up?
Is your Caps Lock key stuck?
The stock process explorer in the task manager won't tell you all of the processes that are running. Download Process Explorer v11.04 and run it. It should show the errant process that is gobbling your CPU cycles.
i second dragonsprayer, its the only other logical reason if all the temps/volts are fine. unless his dad has TLB errata error in his dad's e6600 i don't see any other reason.
I didn't say it wasn't a virus, I just said the OP should try process explorer to see if he can see what it is. There are other things that can spike processor usage. Additionally, although it's no guaranty, I hope they are using some type of antivirus software.

I doubt the TLB errata but is a slight possibility. But with all the new steppings and patches for the BIOS I doubt it.
I think spyware/adware. Also go to http://support.asus.com/download/d [...] uage=en-us and download the latest BIOS/chipset drivers. That always help as some include performance updates.

What TLB errata? For an E6600?
@OP: yeah, try Process Explorer first of all. Just keep in mind that a smart virus might fool Process Explorer and not show up. Sony's rootkit in 1995 was able to hide itself really well, for example.
I wonder if a file corruption in Windows could do this.
Isn't the TLB errata limited to AMD Phenoms. I hope the OP gets back with some answers hopefully provided by process explorer.

I was looking at a machine that showed 30-50% usage that wouldn't show up on the XP process explorer. The Sysinternals one showed the usage in the hardware interrupts, which was later traced back to the IDE controller being shifted to PIO mode when XP crashed. Go figure.
Actually all CPU's have many errors when shipped, but BIOS updates help patch up those errors. AMD's phenom just had a really big performance hit, and AMD made it aware that that was why Phenom would be clocked so low.
I'm not questioning that CPU errata exists, just the TLB erratum on the core2 duo. I believe it is only on the Phenom.

My son was having a simular problem. We tried just about everything and finally found the battery in the keyboard was almost dead by trying a different keyboard.
Not saying this is your problem but there are a lot of weird things that can happen.
How many antivirus programs do you have running ?????
Go into safe mode by pressing F8 at start up and see if its still slow
Go in to Control Panel - XP add and remove programs or Vista - Programs and features
and see whats installed
if you have conflicting software - ie antivirus - remove one of them
download
www.superantispyware.com - its free and very good
www.ewido.com - avg antispyware.
run hijackthis - type it in google and it will come up and send a report of what you find
it might be worth running smitrem in safemode and vundofix ( both searchable on google )
Good luck and let us know
If the problem's only just started I can't really see it being a CPU errata.
I guess we will never know the resolution.
Hard disk usage anyone? If you have a slow relatively small hard drive that has become somewhat fragmented over time ... as well as maybe 1 or 2 antivirus programs scanning all the time then the PC will be deadly slow. Looking at the CPU usage will not tell you anything in most cases of slow PC's, for years CPU's have pretty much been on top of the programs they have to run. Other hardware can be the cause
Hmmm I have seen this happen a few times before,if you look at the processe's that are running is they one instance of svchost that has blown out in excess of 100K ?
If so try disbaling automatic updates for a sec and seeing if it calms down.
this may not be any help but it certainly wont hurt,I have seen this happen before and I really think you should try my soloution.
Good luck either way.

TRY A SYSTEM RESTORE FROM BEOFRE DATE OF PROBLEM.JUST A THOUGH AND IT DON'T TAKE BUT A MINUTE!
BUT IT DOES SOUND LIKE VIRUS OR CORRUPTION
50-100% CPU usage w/ no process showing that much usage in the Windows sock Taskmanager is most likely Hardware Interupts and DPC's. Which would mean it's a driver conflict. Just a thought.
Is the temp you have now what it usually is when 100%? you could OC it to see if it overheats. Taskmanager lies.
Best bet: Virus, Spyware, or other unneeded service. ( some one on the forums had some random program runing in the back ground that loded their CPU to 100% after loging in.)

That's what I was thinking. That's why I wanted him to run the Sysinternals Process Explorer. It will show those things. A restore could also clear the trouble, as Major53 said.
After you fix it tell your dad no more PORN.
So COWSPOO we are dieing to know something......anything....please....

I was thinking the same thing ...lol.
Zorg Sysinternals Process Explorer good software just used it. cowspoo try it it's free.then try restore!
Sysinternals has a lot of nifty little utilities.
i was just kidding about the errata. jeez people on these forums need a sense of humor. anyways, you can check system info if there are conflicts, you don't have to download all that other junk.
just do this:
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information
than in system information:
locate the tree > expand "components" > click on problem devices
also in system information you can check for conflicts and see what IRQ's are given to which devices.
locate the tree > expand hardware resources > click conflicts/sharing
I guess a pornofest could be the thing to blame here, you know.......
But then again I am saying I have been ( in the past i hasten to ad ) a victim of porn slowdowns due to advertising of the scrupulous nature....
Dammit
I don't know if this is related, but this is another thread started at the same time by cowpoo.
Raptor showing 2.3mb/s transfer rate
That one apparently turned out to be a bad SATA cable, which could have caused a high usage in the hardware interrupts, which wouldn't show up in the XP process explorer.
Or it could be that he had two unrelated posts at the same time that are not related at all.
I don't know about you guys, but I'll be mad at him if he doesn't come back and tell us what it was
I asked him in the other thread if it was related to this thread. I thought he would come back and post here, I guess not. Somewhat trollish behavior.
eh, Run > cmd > chkdsk /f restart machine. Requires the least effort and won't hurt anything.
Zorg thanks for finding out what cowpoop problem was, sata cable, would have been nice if he came back in and thanked the people that gave him help.also thanks for the sysinternals tip good software.

Wow, excellent find! This utility looks extremely handy!
