The website will tell you what each BIOS revision "fixes". check to see which revision enables compatibility with the E8500, and update if needed.
Edit: I take that back. It appears that both 0903 and 1001 add support for new CPUs. Unfortunately nowhere could I find which CPUs they are referring to. The Asus website sucks. I would update the BIOS to be on the safe side.

You have to enter the motherboard or CPU info into the search at this link. This link doesn't show what 1001 supports. It just says 0903 supports the e8500, among others.
You can't find anything under the mobo choice, but I see where it is under the CPU choices. However, I don't see any CPU that requires the 1001 BIOS. Typical.
@suzana: If you are concerned about updating the BIOS, especially considering they show 0903 as sufficient, then install the CPU on 0903. If it has problems slap in the old one and update.
