Good 8800GTX Brand

To replace my twin 3870s as they came with the annoying 23% fan speed lock so they hit 100c after a few minutes of load im looking at either getting 3870s which have working cooling (so i dont need to mess about with the bios) or one more expensive geforce.

Looking on this site (http://www.techspot.com/article/83-crysis-patch-performance-multigpu/page3.html), it seems that at DX9 1680x1050 and High quality (what ill use) it seems that the 8800GTX outperforms two 3870s in crossfire (and ive not heard of any problems with the geforce cooling).

As i live in England ide prefer to use someone like Overclockers or EBuyer as ive used them both a lot before and trust them, so does anyone have a suggestion of a good brand to get? Oh, and my budget is about £280-300.

Thanks

Update: It looks like this BFG Model is a good one, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-035-BG&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=877

Is ATITool better than Riva then? Im moving away from crossfire 3870s as unless they come with a working cooler Riva wont do both fan speeds and bios flashing is risky. If ATITool will definately increase both fan speeds i might reconsider 3870s, but currently the BFG 8800GTX OC looks really good (better benchmarks at 1680x1050 in DX9 on Crysis than a pair of 3870s).

Ok, i think i get what you're saying. A GTX uses more power than a GTS and twin 3870X2s, and a single 3870X2 is better than a GTX anyway.

My RMA wont be completed till monday anyway as they received them today and havent tested them so will probably do it on monday. I thought the X2s were out on thursday, if its now monday that would explain why i couldnt find them!

Wrong, 2 3850 dont always beat a singe 8800GTX:
http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/ATI_Radeon_HD_3870_and_3850_55nm_RV670/

even 2 HD 3870 cant always beat a single 8800GTX and i have talked about in the FAQ too

also 8800gts 512 is a good performer and sometimes outperforms the GTX, but crank up the resolution and add some AA and eye candy and the the GTX is better
http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/NVIDIA_GeForce_8800_GTS_Refresh_Asus_and_XFX/

Generally speaking though, the GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB’s performance is better than the original 640MB GTS and the relatively new 8800 GT and on-par with the GeForce 8800 GTX at lower resolutions. Crank up the resolutions, however, and the GTX (or Ultra) is still the king of the hill.

Thanks Mazair, so the GTX is better in some cases than twin 3870s, and its a lot easier as it actually cools itself!

But will a GTX be better than a 3870X2 which is out on monday and is the only other card im considering as well as a 8800GTX?

Well i got my RMA this morning so im getting my £280 back. I can now look for a 3870X2 or get the BFG 8800GTX (if either fits!). The 8800 is favourite currently as a 3870 is about £300 without delivery.

I'd say go with the 3870X2, a little bit above Ultra performance for a great price. Seems like there's some good OCing potential on the cards too.
