I'm thinking about building my first computer and I'm wondering about getting an 8800 gts(320 mb) and wondered if the release of the 9 series could would make 8 series cards significantly cheaper. I'm on a budget of around $800.
@ $200, it may or may not be a good deal, considering that the 8800GT 512MB can be had for $240. If you like silence and cooler video cards, the 8800GTS 320MB is the way to go. If you want more performance and don't mind the noise or heat, the 8800GT is the way to go.
Don't get the 320MB version. It has already been discontinued and it's driver support is less than stellar. I wouldn't get a 640MB version either. The new G92 chips are the way unless you intend to buy a GTX or Ultra.
But to answer your question, the flag-ship cards (Ultra/GTX) will not get cheaper, neither will the older G80 cards (320/640 GTS). The G92 chip cards could get cheaper though.
I had a 8800GTS 320mb vanilla and I unloaded it for $220. CDN. 8600GTS Sc (720mhz) can be bought used for $80. CDN. The 320mb had some issues with refresh rates which nvidia avoided dealing with. This was a documented slow down which Alt Tab would alleviate. There is a consensus that the resale market is a buyers market. Newer cards are to appear shortly forcing a price war. The 320mb card is equilvalent to a 3850 in performance but it can be had for as low as $169. This will only get better as newer cards are launched and retailers bite the bullet on slow moving older cards. I am sitting this out to check the spoils!
