Crossover cable,
verify "Client For Microsoft Networks" is present and checked
add "NWLink NETBIOS" protocol
turn on file and printer sharing,
make drives "shared" on both machines
Open Windows Explorer...
My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>
and see if both machines show up, and the shared drives.
This is compact, as requested.
