Why the mouse stalls for a few seconds?

On Vista, the mouse cursor freezes regularly for a few seconds. What do I need to do? Get a new mouse?
Anybody has a clue? That is quite frustrating.

Bring up task manager, start moving the mouse, and see what resource is grabbibg the cpu cycles.
