i wouldnt say that amd's are slow, they just arent as fast as intel
as for gaming, i have a 3800 x2 at 2.0 and it runs just fine with my 8800gt although i am going to be upgrading to a core 2/core 2 quad in a couple months.
Geforce is no longer in any "rush" to make anything better. After all they are not in a race with themselves. No need to beat the #1 card/company....Geforce.
Same with Intel, no need to try to outdo ... Intel.
This is what happens with a monopoly. Pray amd and ati actually push for better/faster products again.

You do realize the 3870X2 out performs the Ultra in most situations, and nVidia's answer, the 9800 GX2 is looking to underperform due to heat issues. 550 MHz core? No thanks.
I'd take a 550Mhz core any day if i get a second graphics card free with it.
Uh.. MSRP is going to be 450-550 probably. I'd rather have 2 800 MHz 8800 GTSs. I just can't quad SLI those.
So in that case, I'd rather have 2 3870X2s since CFX seems to scale better than SLI in most situations.
Of course it's all just personal preference, I'm just saying ATi is in no way that far behind nVidia. They are actually right on their heals (finally).
Is Quad SLI going to be a valid option? I've heard rumors about it being OK and others that it's no good....
Sure... Quad SLI worked great for nVidia last time around (sarcasm) .

even if both the graphics cards are underperforming simply because of a (fixable) heat issue?

Last time I checked Geforce was a brand and not a company (sorry that just got on my nerves)

if ati goes under then we are all screwed i dont wanna pay over 1k for graphics cards
ATI is starting to bounce back, they've had great Driver support over the past few months (much better than nVidia) and for them to put out a 2x1PCB card that isnt just a NOVELTY. That's great. and drivers that work will only make that better.

This statement isn't exactly true... look what intel has given us over the past few years: they've pulled themselves out of the performance hole they were in with netburst, they've successfully gotten 45nm chips into the retail market WELL before AMD, and they're right on schedule with Nehalem, which some are speculating to be even more of a performance leap than Netburst => Core 2, for H208. So I would argue that Intel IS outdoing itself in most cases.
$300 bucks gets you a 3870X2. This is supposed to be on par with the 9800GX2 as it's also slated to be 30% better than the ULTRA. $300 9800GX2? I think not.

The prices I've seen are between $480 and $665. I see that you like ATI and I wish them the best but until both cards are out and benched against each other your just spewing fud.

^^^ this is truth but prices are bound to come down within a few months. Only a few etailers have them at the moment and price gouging is the usual when a new card comes out. Still, $480 for better-than-ultra performance isn't too shabby. Plus, 2 GPUS on one PCB is COOL !
