Use avi files open with context menu

Hello,
All of the associated programs in the context menu "open with" for *.avi does not show instead I get another "Open with" submeuu. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try installing VLC Media player.

I already have it installed when that happened. All the programs associated that belongs in the submenu disappeared instead I get a submenu with the same name "Open with". I did get it to work by copying the values of another video file (mp4) but still unlike before in the last line "Choose program" which starts a window that lets me choose other program to open an avi file once I have chosen it, it becomes a part of the submenu "Open with" now it doesn't.
