CPU or GPU Upgrade?

Im upgrading in about a month with $300 and I would like to know what would be the most beneficial upgrade for me CPU or GPU, my current setup is:

Pentium D 925 3.0ghz
ECS Alhena5 Mobo ATI RC415/ATI SB600 Chipset (cheap)
7950GT 256mb
2GB DDR2-533
Windows Vista

If I upgrade to a new cpu that means Im going to need a new mobo because my current one only supports up to a pentium d. Also I cant go above 1024x768 with my monitor so high res isn't important to me and I upgrade every 6-8 months. From what I heard the 8600GTS are junk so should my 7950GT be able to get better fps in games like gears and pro street with a nice C2D?

I did some of my own benchmarks using fraps and you can see an apparent CPU bottleneck until Crysis.

Gears of War Default Video Settings 800x600
Avg: 54.633 - Min: 31 - Max: 62

Gears of War Default Video Settings 1024x768
Avg: 49.566 - Min: 29 - Max: 61

NFS Pro Street Max Settings No AA/AF 640x480
Avg: 21.183 - Min: 14 - Max: 32

NFS Pro Street Max Settings No AA/AF 1024x768
Avg: 19.966 - Min: 13 - Max: 30

Crysis Medium Settings No AA/AF 800x600
Avg: 21.114 - Min: 0 - Max: 53

Crysis Medium Settings No AA/AF 1024x768
Avg: 15.151 - Min: 0 - Max: 35

More about upgrade
  1. How many OCing options does your mobo have, you might want to OC that chip as some of those are supposed to clock pretty high, then maybe look at a 3850 on the video card end. Or a 3870.
  2. Definately upgrade your cpu. Get a p35 board and e2180 or e4500 and an aftermarket cooler and oc them to 3.0ghz.
  3. I have absolutely 0 overclocking options ;P

with vakers suggestion ill probably upgrade to a E4500 been scoping it out for a month now just have to decide on a nice mobo, need a micro atx also ;(
  4. get gigabyte-p31 with e2180 or e2200 or the 4500
Try and get some value ddr2 800 too
Your GF card is more than you already need ;d
