"let him move up to Phenom in the future"

I have not purchased a CPU yet; I was just using the one above as an idea to start with. I am open to ideas, but would like the motherboard/cpu combo to be around $300. And I do not want to overclock this one; I just want to set it up and let it go. I am open to ideas.

I bought the one in my sig a few months back. Not a bad board, but a better choice would be an AM2+ board, for future upgrading. The 6000+ isn't a bad CPU either :D

AM2+ will allow upgrade to Phenom and other new AMD CPUs in the futue. Could you provide some links saying the AM2+ are crap boards?

I'm sure the second ram will work fine, however if you are going to OC, Corsair ram isn't the way to go. They don't OC very well. That being said, you won't be able to OC very far with the 6000+, so I think it's fine.

Stock heatsink works alright, but if you're planing on OCing, why not go with an Intel? They OC better and perform much faster. You can grab a $100 mobo and a $80 E2160 and OC it to 3.2GHz on stock cooling, which destroys the 6000+ in terms of performance.

From this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/247560-28-should-risk-phenom

"I agree with TC. I'd wait for the B3 stepping before making the jump. For anyone else that's thinking of the Phenom, you should also be aware that the 790FX boards seems to have a problem with the SB600 south bridge. So hold off until the next board revision with the SB700 south bridge mobos are released. A report on the 790FX motherboard problem can be found at:

I've been wanting to go to a quad for some time myself as my computer sometimes slows as I multitask programs that demand more than the dual core can give. Don't know if I can hold off until Phenom is fixed though, so I might buy a new Intel platform, even though its more expensive for a complete system."

Well crap! Is there a stable AM2/AM2+ mothgerboard? What stable AM2 motherboard should I compare it with before I make a decision? I like the idea of being able to help my brother upgrade his CPU a year from now. But, hey, all he really needs now is super low FPS and quick transitions when playing his WoW. But he wants a new system.

The mobo I suggested is a 770 not 790, which is the reviewed mobos B-unit provided. Don't remember reading anything about stability with the 770 mobo but would check some reveiws to be sure

Personally man, look into some of the Gigabyte boards, I have an AM2 board of theirs that supports SLI, and says it will take Phenoms with a bios flash. But I love it. Very stable board thus far.
