Clone laptop to tv via hdmi get black screen on both

Hello,
my laptop and tv are set up accurately I know for sure. I think I did something to the display because when I when connect the hdmi cable to the laptop both the laptop monitor and the tv screen go black. It has to be something I did but can't remember. Sure could use the help!!!

You give no specifics as to mfg, make model, so I would refer you to your owner manual for your system.
