I click on items on my desktop but they won't open

I click on items on my desktop, ie I-Tunes and My Pictures and they won't open. I have tried turning off the computer and re-starting, but to no avail.

Boot into safe mode with networking (F8 on startup). Download, install, and update malwarebytes. Do a fully system scan.

Download ccleaner and run the registry tool. You may need to run this a few times to fix all the issues.

Restart and see if the problem is solved.
