Actually hard to say. If you look at the CPU support for " P5W DH Deluxe" the only QX CPUs are:

Core 2 Extreme QX6700 (2.66GHz,1066FSB,L2:2X4MB,rev.B3,4 cores) ALL
1407

Core 2 Extreme QX6800 (2.93GHz,1066FSB,L2:2X4MB,rev.G0,4 cores) ALL
2205

Core 2 Extreme QX6850 (3.00GHz,1333FSB,L2:2X4MB,rev.G0,4 cores) ALL
2205

Both E8400 and E8500 Wolfdales show up.

But I don't see any QX9x50 chips listed. Unless I looked up the wrong MB.

Hi,

if you read :

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forum [...] 3&page=266

and following pages, it works but without support for speedstep (like the E8x00 series).

However, the user had to reinstall windows.

I am waiting for the Q9450 and official bios support for asus as I have this mb too with and E6600 right now (does a great job with games, so I can wait two months for the new quads).

someone posted a link few weeks ago about of a new BIOS update for P5W DH which will let it support 45nm CPUs
Also when a motherboard supports E8500 and E8400 which are euqipped with 133MHZ FSB and they are 45nm then howcome it cant support QX9650 which has 1333MHZ FSB and its 45nm ?
I say it will support it but to be %100 sure then i recommend to ask ASUS itself

Well it has to do with how the MB manufacture set the MB with the chipset.

For example even my MB (P6N Platinum by MSI) will support wolfdales (E8xxx) but will not support QX9770 or QX9660. It did say that it supported the Q9550, which went back to testing.

My MB can be found with CPU support: P6N SLI Platinum

So that is why I said it actually hard to say.

Edit:

If you click on the news there, they haven't changed what they said when EVGA comment on their 680i chipsets, which also goes with the 650i chipset:

Quote :

Taipei, Taiwan %u2013 Micro-Star International (MSI), one of the world-renowned designers and manufacturers of high-quality mainboards, announces its P6N series (680i/650i-based) mainboard will support 45nm Wolfdale (Dual Core) CPUs with an upcoming BIOS update. 45nm Yorkfield (Quad Core) CPUs will be supported on upcoming nForce 700-series SLI mainboards.

The MSI P6N series is the most desirable mainboard for SLI gamers, which has been equipped with quad PCI Express x16 slots to support SLI X16 and X-Fi Xtreme Audio to provide the ultimate gaming experience. With BIOS update support for upcoming 45nm Intel processors (Wolfdale, dual core), MSI P6N series can extend its value cycle and brings more performance to enthusiasts.

Grimmy, Asus normly holds their word. Can't say for sure for MSI. My mobo box states support for multi core 45nm CPU support and It does have all the new Penryns and Yorkfeilds added along with the new Q6400.

I hope that if MSI claimed support it will have support. Don't talk the talk if you can't walk the walk right?

I've own both brands in the past. They are about the same, as far as reliability. The chipset itself (680i, and 650i) are supposively designed to support 45nm, but then from what I remember, its just the last bit of details they didn't get that causes other problems.

But then I will be happy when I get my hands on a Q6600, in April perhaps. :D

Yes you will be happy. I have mine running @ 3GHz at 1.248v which is less than the stock 1.25v. It rocks. Haven't benched it in anything yet but am sure it screams. I know I can unzip a 170MB Naruto Shuppuden episode in like 3-5 seconds.

Thanks guys for the speedy response, I have used my qx6700 on that board but that is a 65 nm chip, where the QX6950 is a 45 nm chip. I guess the best way is to try it!!

Why wasting your money for QX9650, just OC your QX6700 and enjoy :)

Well that's a good question, the answer is that I run that machine 24/7 folding at home and the QX6700 uses a lot more juice than the newer part. My 6700 is running at 3.2 Ghz with a lot of water cooling ie fans pumps etc. It's fast but I live in Arizona and in the summer it get's upto 120 in the daytime and only cools down to the 90's at night. So I can really use a cooler running chip.

I'm having trouble with my qx9650 & my P5W DH Deluxe it posts and recognises the chip after I install it & will boot to vista fine but it will not post if I restart or power of the system. I'm using the latest bios from the asus support website.
Anyone had this sort of problem?
