if it's like most 8600gt cards, it doesn't require power anywhere but the pci-e slot itself.

apologies, I'm thinking of the GTS...

that said; what is the other motherboard you tried the 8600 in?

My brother couldnt tell me the exact name of the board... hes kinda far away and not much of a computer nerd. Its some Nforce sli enabled board i believe is what he told me.

When i put the 8600 in my computer the fan runs on the card.. but when i start up i get 3 beeps and no video input.

These beeps are the computers way of telling you what is wrong AMI Bios beeps.
3 short beeps is the bios code for bad memory try taking the ram out and reseating it.

The memory should be fine. I kept it in for the diamond graphics card. Its only when i switch the 8600 in when i get the beeps

You need to delete old drivers then shut down computer reset cmos add new card then fire it back up. It will work if the card is good. Your cmos is just looking for the wrong info until you reset it.

You motherboard has integrated video. That may switch itself on when you change the graphics card. You may need to disable it a second time.
Also if you are switching cards from ATI to Nvidia, you should run Driver Cleaner.
