I recently just put together my pc and have an E8400 with the stock intel cooler. It seems to me after reading different posts that my processor might be running alittle to hot. The temp is around 47 at idle. I have not oc'ed it at all and I am using an antec 900 so airflow should be good. Any help would be appreciated?

Its fine, mine runs @ 45 idle so dont worry

I have not tried Core Temp on my E8400 machine. I'm at work right now and will see its readings when I get home. However, Gigabyte's utility, my BIOS, and SpeedFan tell me it idles at 14-15C.... either your running a little warm or my this thing is piece of **** that doesnt work.

But yeah, you don't need to worry about CPU temps unless you're passing the 60 mark.

Thanks for the info

15C is about 60F, which is unlikely with the stock cooler.

I just used a few different programs and they all read 13-15C at idle. Under load, it shoots up to 32C during UT3 and Prime95 pushes it upto 44C. It may be unlikely if your room temperature is 70+ degrees. I don't have central heating in my room and the temperature hovers around 60-65F. Maybe that helps it keep cool along with the 4 case fans I have.
Also, I believe its called SpeedStep? When the system is at 13C, CPUID is reading the multiplier to be 6x opposed to the 9x under load.

I'm not sure I buy your temps... 60F = 15C, and I doubt your cooler is keeping it under room temp. That's according to http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.htm.

My 8400C @ 3.8GHz idles at 27C, and with 2 copies of Prime95, it hits 41C. That's using a Scythe Ninja cooler. Normal room temps are around 20C. When I downclocked it to stock speeds, it would stay at 27C even after 5 minutes of 2 copies of Prime95.

BTW, my temps were measured using Speedfan, and on an Asus P5K-E motherboard.

I concur.
It's against the basic laws of Phyiscs for his CPU to be running at 15c unless his room is quite a few degrees below 60f. And I seriously doubt that is the case.

I don't doubt they are reporting that figure.
It's just that the figure being reported is not correct.

I finally got CoreTemp working with my system (Vista 64) with this link:
http://forums.erodov.com/local_links.php?catid=18

When Speedfan and AsusProbe measure 40C for the CPU, CoreTemp measures 51C/43C for Core 0/1 respectively. When I shutdown the two copies of Prime95, the temps drop down to 40/40 for CoreTemp, and 27 for AsusProbe/Speedfan.

That sounds about right to me... considering you are running it in a cooler room.

You forget that you are overclocked... Obviously you are going to be running much hotter... Dont forget that he has speedstep enabled. That basically lowers the voltage and multi to make the cpu virtually off! I believe his temps because it makes sense. If his operating system is at idle and his cpu is super uderclocked than there will be minimal if any heat produced.

The E8400 also uses 2-3watts at idle.

There might be "minimal if any" heat produced, but he's not going to be under room temperature, unless he's running some form of refridgeration. 13C = 55F = 5 degrees less than his lowest room temperature mentioned. 44C under load sounds about right, though.

I didn't forget I'm overclocked... I even mentioned that when I ran stock speeds, the only real difference was it ran consistently at 27C, never increasing from that even under full load with 2 copies of Prime95 (one per core). And I also had SpeedStep enabled for both my scenarios.

And just for the record, I'm not accusing anyone of lieing or deliberately misleading anyone else. There seems to be a lot of confusion about the E8400 temperature sensors, particularly with the P35 motherboards (of which I have one).

What are all using to monitor temperatures? I am getting mine Tues and want to see what I'll be getting as far as temps. I have a thermalright ultra-120 extreme on the way too.

What settings are you using for speedstep in bios?

Reply to hughyhunter

Oh yeah... if i'm not mistaken if you change voltages to manual for cpu in bios speedstep will not change your voltages from that position to idle.... but yeah I really think that he wouldnt go below room temps too... maybe 5C above room temps at idle without overclocked voltages.

There's a problem with the temperature sensor on E8400/8500. Intel tool care of this problem on Yorkfield, but on Wolfdale.
Anyhow, Intel specified the maximum temperature for Wolfdale core to be 72.5C, therefore, anything below that should be fine.
