I have a chace to obtain a Q6700 for almost the same price as a Q6600. I know this is a no brainer that it is a step up but I am curious will I see much advantage in performance for the small differance in price? Also, I dont see that many posts about the Q6700, will it overclock as well? As you can tell I am a novice to say the least when it comes to overclocking:)

Sorry,

Iqnore the post I was searching for the QX6700 instead of the Q6700 before the post. I'm still confused what the differance is? Second should I wait a month or so for the q9450? I know this is a old question. just trying to decide to build now or wait? No patience at all:)

If they are the same price, no reason to not get the Q6700.

Both should be able to clock to the same speeds so there is likely not much of a performance difference.

No real need to wait.
The Q6600 will still be a good chip.

In fact, some folks may still choose Q6600 over Q9450 due to possible FSB OCing limits on the Q9450.

I would go for it now.

OK, I reading the old post, still dont quite understand what is the differance between the QX6700 and Q6700? I guess it would help me to take overclocking 101 before I start asking these questions.

A guy at work has it. He ordered it for a new build nad never even opened it. He had a little one come along and just got to busy.

the X in QX6700 means extreme. That means that the multiplier is unlocked. That is so you can drive the CPU independently of the FSB. You don't need the QX unless you want to get freaky with the OC (and even then you don't really need it) or you want minimal bragging rights.

Right, a Q6600 will OC to 3G/1333 on a stock heatsink, but I would get a high end HS to keep the CPU cool for longevity. Also the stock HS mounting pin setup is complete crap, they come loose. Get a Heatsink with a backplate design.

One other thing about the X CPUs is that the chips are supposed to be higher binned, meaning that they will OC better, but I wouldn't count on that being the case. The Q6600 OCs very well, the problem is getting rid of the heat.
