have been doing my homework for some time and i have finally decided to do a new build and turn my old pc into a game server. here's what i have lined up. was wondering if anyone see's any potential problems i missed. i am going to be running vista ult 64.
ok now i have 2 8800gtx in my fx60 machine now and will pull those, week of the first i'll buy another gtx for tri-sli and buy 2 gts (g92) or maybe a 9800gx2? for my fx 60 as it will run as a game server/ guest computer for LAN and htpc (as i mentioned i am waiting on the bluray/hddvd combo drives to get back in stock). both these machines will be running off 1080p hdtvs.

The only hole I see is with the PSU. I don't think its gonna be your best buy. You probly don't need 1300watts. Try a OCZ or Corsair PSU, like 850watt would do the job, unless you think you will do tri-sli. Thats the only thing I would change.

Less Voltage *AND* tighter timings. I have a DDR2-800 kit from Transcend that will run at 1200 MHz.
Personally this is my recommendation:
Wait until the 790i comes out. Get it with DDR3 and a QX9650. At that point evaluate the GPU market. If it seems next gen is on the horizon get a "hold over" card. Otherwise get Dual 9800 GX2s or SLI'd 8800 GTSs.
I just really advise against an investment like this when the next gen cards in the summer will be 30-50% faster per GPU.
i understand where ur coming from and to be honest i have been putting off my build for some time. i want the machine i am running now to be a good game server and decent game machine for a bit longer as i like having 2 gaming pc's in the house, plus they are both doubling as htpc for my two big screen hdtv's. my current pc is a fx60 sli based machine, it just barely handles 1080p in most new games. now i think it will last through the summer into next winter before its nothing more than a server and no good to play new games on. thus i want the machine i build now to be good for while (cpu wise and gpu's upgrade as needed) so next year when nethlam (or amd pulls a miricale recovery by then) comes out i can build another system and still have 2 solid gaming systems. i thought about waiting for the 790i, but i just don't want to invest into ddr3 yet...as for new gpu's, there always around the corner...i buy new ones when the price drops on the yet to be released stuff next time this year.

I hate saying wait myself.. but I always do.
And why not DDR3? 2 GB of DDR3 1333 MHz (which out perform that 1200 MHz Corsair) are half as much!
If you can hold out just a bit longer, I think you'd end up happier than dropping $2100 on video cards now only for them to be obsolete in 4 months.
The 8800 GTX/Ultra had the performance crown for 18 months. They are near the end of their life span. The 3870X2 outperforms them.
i already have 2 gtx's...i was getting 2 8800 gts (g92) for my old machine (fx 60). i am aware they are near then end of there life in the bleeding edge segment. but regardless i want a new build so i can lan my two hdtv's. i figure the build i have just ordered should last me a couple years and my old machine i can replace it next year this time when prices drop after the holidays.

so thought i would give you all an update. while i am only running 2 gigs of ram as i had to rma 2 sticks these are my vista 64 3dmark 06 at default setting. these results for my system with a mild over clock...qx9650 3.6 fsb@ 1600, ddr2 1250 (@1248 for some reason when i up the fsb i lose 2 mhz), 3 gigabyte 8800gtx's sli'd at stock speeds.
