I just bought mine of eBay... budget build. I can't suggest throwing away hundreds, but if you're looking for something simple/cheaper, it's a great way to save some cash.
Just look for someone with really positive feedback, and/or guarantees the unit works.
I bought a P4 EE 3.4GHz Northwood for $150 on Ebay and its still running. This was about 1 year ago. It runs great. Took my DVD9 to DVD5 ripping from 30 minutes to 7 minutes and haven't had a problem yet. Best way is to check thesellers rating. If its 90% or higher its a sure deal.
I would suggest you check starmicro first. They don't sell used or refurb cpus. I don't believe you will save much on ebay, but if you want a cpu that's no longer available, then ebay is your best bet.

Ebay is a great way to save. Loot at my first post. A Pentium 4 Extreme Edition that debut at $1500 dollars for $150? Thats a huge savings. I got it for 10% of the original cost and it still works great.
Also to the OP, most will have a return period so make sure the one you look at does cuz if it doesn't work you will be SOL without a return agreement.
