what's the performance difference between the 8600m GT 512MB DDR3 and the 8700m GT 512MB DDR3?

Should be roughly proportional to whatever the clockspeed difference is. The 8700GT is an overclocked 8600GT and not terribly powerful because of it... of course its all relative. I believe that I can safely say it will be significantly slower than a desktop 8600GTS.

overclocking a laptop gpu is something i've never done...i'd imagine i'd just load up rivatuner or something and see what i can press out of the chip?

Not sure if you can overclock it. I know the drivers on my Sager are locked so as to prevent heat related damage to the system.

Use Omega drivers and you can oc like normal.

I should have specified when I posted before. I did mean on stock drivers and it may just be a Sager thing. If you download drivers from laptopvideo2go.com or the afore mentioned Omega's, you should be able to OC. With mine on stock drivers, I can unlock the OC portion using Coolbits and set it to what I want, but the settings automatically revert back to default. Some google/ forum searching may be required to find out if your system can OC with the stock drivers.
