After a month of looking @ the expert advice here, im finally ready to order...I think, can I get a "once over" to make sure im not missing anything? I would like to order today, if all goes well.
I dont plan on OC'ing, system will be used for gaming, not high end, but HL2, Star Craft 2, when it comes out, etc. Resonable upgrade path, ie: more Ram, 2nd HDD if/when needed, sound card, and Vista eventually, just not ready for it yet.
Thanks!

My concern is the motherboard, will the one listed work well with the new E8400? Is there a better option?

everything looks fine. The mobo should be ok with the wolfdale, I myself went with an X38 board because I know they are compatible out of the box.

Enjoy it!

Would you mind recommending an X38? If the $ is close and it will cause less hassles for me, im all for the change. Thanks.

X38 will cost you over $200 whether you go gigabyte or asus. The P35 will work, but you MIGHT need to update the bios to take full advantage of the wolfdale. The one you chose should be fine, don't worry about it.

The DS3L will work out of the box with the 8400, but you are right about the BIOS update, it may help improve performance.

Great, so I should be fine with the MoBo i have will work, but the X38, will work better/faster....hmmm, for $100 more I think I will stick it out with the P35.

Thanks for the quick responses, I will wait till EOB today, then NEWEGG here I come. :)

I see a problem with the RAM and OS.

You have 4GB of RAM, but only XP. In order to take advantage of 4GB of RAM you need 64bit OS.

Make sure you look into this.

Asus P5E definitely works with E8400, it was used by xbitlabs in a review of the E8400. It costs a lot more than the DS3L though. Also, the Crossfire support won't do you any good with an 8800GT. If you do get the P5E I recommend changing the video card to HD 3870 and the PSU to OCZ Silencer 610W (or PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610W, same thing, depends on where you buy it).

We definitely need a sticky about this. You are perfectly correct, yes, but the way you put it, it sounds much worse than it is.

Synner, you will see only 3.5 GB with XP 32-bit, that's the only problem. It's still worth getting 4GB, at current DDR2 prices. Also, a 64-bit OS (XP or Vista) has other and bigger problems than not seeing the last 0.5 GB. I'm personally using XP-32 bit with 4 GB of RAM and it works very nicely.

I like all your choices. The hard disk is good, it's just that it seems a bit small and a bit pricy/GB. My favorite hard disk these days is the WD7500AAKS. It's a bit more than twice the price of this Seagate, but a bit faster and 3 times bigger.

Yeah, like drivers and application compatibility. >.> Just make sure you get 2x2GB and not 1x4GB. You may not get all 4GB, but you avoid the inevitable headache that will come from a 64 bit OS. Once it gets the support it needs you can upgrade to 64 bit. :)

I was aware of the 4GB ram issue, but figured I would get Vista eventually, but thanks for the heads up.
I may change the HDD as well, for the $ it seems to be a good deal.

Any other comments on the case? I thought it was rated pretty high, now im concerned, I really like the simple design, but dont want to risk overheating if the air flow is really bad.

You guys are great, thanks for all the info so far.

The case is ok, you can get an Antec 900 for the same price after rebate if you're worried. It's got fantastic airflow and looks pretty cool to boot.
January 25, 2008 7:56:05 PM

I like the RC-690.

Still, the Antec 900 at $80 with free shipping is a steal, and you won't have to worry about cooling with that one. Yeah, take ComputerCustomizer's advice. That is, if you can stand the blue lights of the Antec 900. :)

Edit: rgeist beat me to it, I hadn't read his reply yet.

Consider an Antec 900. MaximumPC gave the Cooler Master 690 a 4/10 for very poor quality. The 900 is only 25-30 bucks more. And it looks way better. Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
EDIT: It's only 80 bucks with the rebate. That's a great deal.

I just bought the CoolerMaster, with a $45 rebate, and there is not one thing wrong with it. I did move the side panel fan to the top, which was a little tedious, but for the price i paid, I have to praise it
January 25, 2008 9:21:13 PM

Ok, done and done. :)  I added a bigger HDD and went with the Antec Nine Hundred to avoid any problems. Just ordered, I hope to post the results next week!

Thanks again to all you regulars that make it possible for knuckleheds like me to build a great system.

Cheers!
