Ok, I know that the overclocking "bread and butter" for the AMD side was the 5000+, but with the 5400 BE here I am thinking about getting it and trying my hand at overclocking. Has any tried to overclock these babies yet? I am thinking about pairing this with the new 790GX chipset. ANyone tried this pairing yet? WHat were the results?

True, but do we have any testimonals or suggestions on approaches I should take to properly overclock while increasing performance.

Initial comments on Newegg would lead me to think this processor can overclock slightly higher than the 5000+BE.
Personally I have a 5000+BE at 3.2 GHz and I'm not sure I'd pay too much more to get 100 or 200 MHz higher. Frankly, a standard 5000+ overclocked 20% would cost less (and it comes with a cooler).

yeah, i bought the 5000+ be for my mom's machine. its pretty nice. i set it to run at 2.8 ghz (to get full memory speed) and it runs fine. it did get a little warm, but not like my 4000+ at same speed. i fully broke in my 4000+ and at 2.4ghz it runs at 84F idle...104F full load while gaming. anyways, im poppin that 4000+ into a server, and i just bought the 5400+ off the egg for, guess what? 5 bucks CHEAPER (inc shipping) than what i got my moms 5000+ for two months ago...so really, i paid 10bucks less for it. i think 10dollars cheaper is worth the STABLE 200mhz. i hope this thing rocks, guess i will gather my water parts back out, get some new tubing and water wetter, and go to town!!! be back later with results of my oc, and i pretty much will leave this at stock..no need to oc (already has 800mhz ram control) oh, and yeah, her 5000+ did NOT come with cooler...oh well!!!

Well as far as OCIng the 5400+ this is probably as far as I'll get on air CPU temp is at 38c idle, I'm using a Zalman 9700 and its assisted by an additional intake and exhaust fan.

CPU-Z is incorrectly reporting my V-Core Voltage its actually 1.5125V.

Ran a 15X multi on stock voltage, and ran a 16X multi at 1.400V.

RAM is at 2.125V

Everything else is in its stock settings, FSB, HT, Etc.

I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 and 2 BFG 8800GT's in SLI also OC'd

Only bench I've run to date is 3D Mark 03 at 57,599

hotness!! that is amazing....3.4ghz at 1.5..isnt that like intel range? 1.5v? not bad man. wonder if i can get that on water, but i dont want to run the vcore so high. maybei will leave it at 14 multi. or 16, still gives me full 800mhz speed on ram. that is a good little chip for sure though for the price!

Note: Running WinXP 32bit I've had no problems with the 3.4 OC on air, however Vista 64bit uses the second core quite a bit more and will cause it to run too hot and crash, so for Vista 64bit and probably also for XP 64bit if you're going to run the 3.4 settings you'll need watercooling.

The 3.2 settings will run Vista 64bit all day long with no problems at all!

so, i have the chip under water now in my system, and it runs good at stock. i think i will crank it up to 16x multi and see what it can do. 1.4 should be able to run it. after an hour or two of gaming chip got up to 39c, under p95 with both cores running hit 41c. kinda sucky, but my bottom tube into the pump is pinched a little...not enough room in this case. i should have gotten a p500 pump...this p400 sucks!!

After much testing in Vista 64 I finally found her exact sweet spot for the 16X multiplier the Vcore is 1.4250 on air cooling.

One problem I encountered was the ASUS M/B did not set the OCZ memory properly.

Neither the timings nor the DDR2 voltage were set right.

I had to get the memory specs from OCZ and manually set everything, even if you're not running an ASUS M/B make sure the timings for your memory are set right, especially the operating voltage.
