So I recently built a computer, which I may or may not eventually overclock.

My old dell (pentium 4) had a heatsink, but my new (C2Q9550) only came with a fan. Monitoring my temps through nvidia control panel show the cpu is fine.

why does the new chip not come with a heat sink? Should I get an aftermarket fan/sink?

If yes, recommendations?

belo the c2q9550 should have came with a heatsink.I still would have put a aftremarket heatsink on it even if it had came with the heatsink and fan,the one's that come with the intel cpu are junk . my e8400 came with a heatsink and fan,and I still brought a new heatsink and fan.when ever I buy new cpu I always buy new heatsink and fan.hope this help you out.

If yes, recommendations?really need to know what motherboard and model

I believe it looks like this, and I guess I was just confused. I was looking for the "tower" based heatsink with a horizontal fan.

This must be a new design, anyhow I have an evga 780i mobo. Price really isn't much of an issue.

^^ looks like it. That's what I could find online. It's all installed and running fine. I'm just wondering if it's worth spending 30 bucks on an aftermarket fan/sink.

But as it stands this processor is nutty. I have no need or wish to overclock currently.

belo have you check the cpu temps, also did that heatsink come with a thermal pad on the bottom of it or did you apply thermal compound,if temp ok and your not overclocking it ok the way it is
